Chapter Fifteen

Detroit, Michigan, USA

6th of August, 5:25 p.m. (GMT-4)

Martinez churned over her busy afternoon as she crawled in rush hour traffic. At Gerrold’s house, she’d confirmed him as the third known victim of the Hollow, and like Emily Schappel, he wasn’t a registered practitioner and there was nothing magical at his house. Then she’d met with Meridiana and took her account on what she’d found out about the Hollow, and the attempted attack afterward. Martinez had never imagined she would be sipping iced tea with a fiend on the riverside with a piece of outsider in her bag, nor had she considered that succubi had mothers...but why not? Everyone had a mother.

According to Meridiana, it had co-opted her reflection in the mirror and made eye contact to entice her to make physical contact with the mirror, which quickly turned against its favor. Not only was she absent a soul—at least in the mortal sense of the word—she had a very sharp dagger and the ability to astrally reach through the mirror. Martinez had picked up on the succubus’s indignation; she might no longer kill what she caught, but she was still a hunter, not prey. When asked about the composition of her dagger, Meridiana “hadn’t the foggiest” and ordered dessert.

It had been the best lead Martinez had on the killer in the past two days, but she still had her doubts about working with a devil. Clearly, Meridiana could lie, as evidenced by her statement to Detroit PD about the nature of her relationship with Janice Keller, which piqued Martinez’s interest.

She’d returned to the Salt Mine and spent a few hours on the sixth floor, first catching up Chloe and Dot in hopes they would know what could be done with the contents of the mason jar. A judicious salting had confirmed it was the same being responsible for the three asphyxiated bodies in the morgue, but other than that, Martinez was outclassed. Outsiders were rarely encountered compared to all the other types of supernatural creatures, and were therefore only briefly touched upon during her training.

Martinez would have read up on them except those were the exact same volumes that the twins would need to conduct their research. While the twins had eidetic memories, being able to physically manipulate the information made it much easier for them to make connections, rather than doing it all in their minds’ eyes. So instead of reading about outsiders, Martinez had spent an hour reading up on Meridiana’s history, which turned out to be quite convoluted. She was a succubus whose favored pre-curse pastime was enticing religious people to break their vows of celibacy, but she ended up falling in love with Gerbert of Aurillac, a brilliant, progressive scholar who’d fled to a religious life after getting his own heart broken. Gerbert’s meteoric rise to become the first French Pope in 999 was controversial; his broad scope of learning from “the heathens” in mathematics and astronomy was treated with suspicion, say nothing of the
